Our Testing Philosophy
Every car seat review on CarseatLab is conducted by a team of certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) using a standardized testing protocol developed over 7 years. We believe that parents deserve the same quality of safety information that professional crash investigators use.
We never accept payment from manufacturers to influence our ratings. Our affiliate commissions are earned after the review is published — not before — ensuring our editorial decisions are never influenced by commercial relationships.
Our 5-Step Testing Protocol
Crash Test Data Analysis
We analyze all available crash test data from NHTSA, IIHS, and independent testing labs. This includes frontal, side-impact, and rollover scenarios. We review sensor data from head, chest, and pelvis accelerometers to understand injury risk.
Real-Vehicle Installation Testing
We install each seat in at least 3 different vehicles: a compact sedan, a mid-size SUV, and a minivan. We test both LATCH and seat belt installation methods, and evaluate how easy it is to achieve a correct installation.
Harness & Buckle Evaluation
We test harness adjustment ease, buckle operation, chest clip positioning, and crotch strap length across multiple child sizes (using standardized test dummies). We evaluate how easy it is to achieve a snug, correct fit.
30-Day Real-World Use
Our team uses each seat for at least 30 days in real-world conditions. We evaluate durability, fabric quality, ease of cleaning, cup holder functionality, and daily usability factors that affect whether parents use the seat correctly.
CPST Verification
Before publication, every review is reviewed and verified by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician who was not involved in the original testing. This provides an independent check on our conclusions.
Our Scoring System
We score car seats on two separate scales: a Safety Score (1–10) and an Overall Rating (1–10). These are calculated independently to ensure safety performance is never obscured by convenience or value factors.
